As Jamie Oliver last week denounced substandard European pig farms and, instead, urged consumers to buy British, Animal Aid published its shocking findings from an investigation into some of the leading pig farm operators in the country.
Among the scenes we filmed were pregnant and nursing sows incarcerated in farrowing crates; dead, sick and dying piglets littering the pens; animals wading through filth or living in utterly barren environments; a lack of bedding; and a lack of environmental enrichment.

From 5th February, Sainsbury?s will no longer sell eggs from battery hens. This decision comes three years before an EU-wide ban on battery cages comes into force. The supermarket will not be selling eggs from birds kept in larger 'enriched' cages either. And has also set a target to stop using caged eggs as an ingredient in its food and drink by 2012.
While I applaud this ethical decision, it will not end the suffering of chickens. Even in 'higher welfare' production systems, hens are sent to slaughter when they are no longer able to produce the amount of eggs required by the industry - often at just two years old. Their worn-out bodies go into cheap meat products such as soups, pies and pet food. And, as half the 60 million chicks bred to replace them each year are male, they are deemed useless and gassed or shredded alive in giant mincing machines.
For those consumers who are concerned with animal welfare, the simplest way to end the suffering is not to buy any eggs.
Eggs contain high amounts of cholesterol and saturated fat - two of the main causes of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. There are no nutrients in eggs that cannot be obtained from plant-based foods.

Not content with selling live turtles in its stores in China, Tesco have now decided to sell the fatty livers of tortured birds in its stores in this East European country. There is absolutely no justification for Tesco making a profit on the back of birds that suffer such cruel treatment that the production of foie-gras is effectively banned in the UK. It seems that as far as animal welfare is concerned with Tesco: out-of-sight, out-of-mind.
Help us change their minds. Find out out how to get involved here. Watch Viva!'s Justin Kerswell interviewed about Tesco and the sale of foie-gras in Hungary on Five News (January 14) here.

Virtually all cask ales are fined using isinglass - collagen from the swim bladder of fish - and sometimes other animal derived products, such as dried blood.

While many global food companies are switching to free range eggs, Tesco has so far failed to make any commitment to end the sale of eggs from caged hens. That's why Compassion In World Farming awarded the UK's largest retailer with a 2008 'Rotten Egg Award.'
While Tesco is targeted, other companies are celebrated through CIWF's Good Egg Awards.
M&S, Waitrose and the Co-op have already ended the sale of shell eggs from caged hens. Sainsbury's have committed to do so by 2010 and Morrisons is planning to go free-range on its own label shell eggs by 2010.
Tesco policies mean over a million hens are confined in cages every year, therefore it must do the right thing and stop selling eggs from caged hens.
